Susan (SZN) Kraft, art biography

artist statement

I like to paint both abstractions or figurative pieces in acrylic or oil. I get a great deal of satisfaction building my own canvases, from the stretcher bars to priming the canvas. In 2005, I was invited to bring 21-pieces of my abstractions to have a private show in Beijing at the Chow Yang Culteral Museum. My current series (2007-2010) is more realistic- I depict women in burkas with cakes and high heel shoes to depict the the repressed longings and hidden aspirations of women.
I also build up art groups, made mostly of strong women artists. In 2002, I created a large art space, Art21 Gallery, in downtown Palo Alto. Along with dozens and dozens of original art, we had live jazz, poetry, wine tastings and art walks embedded into the Art21 scene. I promised the artists, if they joined me, to promote the space and their star pieces. Out of promoting them, in 2005 I started a television talk show called "Talk Art". Art21 closed its doors in 2007 and Talk Art is still in production, smd id now broadcast from five different stations in the Bay Area and New York City. Most recently I've joined the board of our local Women's Caucus for Art (WCA) chapter and also promised to help promote national and regional WCA events.
